We are launching Mentoring Project

Dear AEA-EAL Members,
Dear Friends,

We invite you to experience the role of mentor for young lawyers within the joint initiative of AEA-EAL and EYBA (European Young Bars Association).

The Mentoring Program proposes to strengthen communication between generations of senior lawyers and young lawyers, guide young lawyers from different countries in their career path and personal development, and contribute to the implementation of the best standards in the exercise of the profession of a lawyer.

The Mentoring Program is contemplated to be resilient and flexible in adjusting to the availability and needs of the participants. It is envisaged as a process to give both sides positive experiences and benefits, expand professional network, opportunity to improve personal skills and get better self-awareness about possessed expertise.

While senior and young lawyers will be free to set their own goals and activities, organizers recommend that monthly meetings/conversations between mentor and mentee are organized and discuss topics of interest. The general meetings of all mentors and mentees will be held at the launch and the end of the Mentoring Program.

The tentative period for organizing the Program is between February – September 2023.

If you are interested, please send the information indicated in the registration form.

We encourage many of you to become a mentor and share your knowledge and experience with others!

International Day of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, for fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels.

The author of the paintings on posters is Polish painter Elzbieta Szolomiak, born in 1940. She used to travel worldwide, observing women living in many different countries and painting their pictures in very different situations. And as she said, giving permission to use her paintings for the poster of the conference- war is death, it is totally opposite to women’s nature of giving and protecting life.

AEA-EAL President participates in works on future lawyers convention

On 8-10 November 2022 AEA-EAL President Maria Ślązak participated in the 3rd meeting of the Committee of Experts on the Protection of Lawyers (CJ-AV) – a consultative working party of the Council of Europe composed of 15 representatives of Member States, representatives of several international bodies such as Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, European Court of Human Rights, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights and United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.

Observer members of the Committee are, among others, representatives of international lawyers’ organisations, including the European Association of Lawyers (AEA-EAL). Our Association has actively participated in discussions and works on future legal instruments protecting lawyers’ rights since 2017.

Participants concentrated on reviewing the initial proposal of the text of the legal instrument aimed at strengthening the protection of the legal profession and the right to practice without prejudice or restriction, including monitoring and implementation procedures.

Works will be continued now by the Secretariat and Rapporteur. Experts and observers will meet again next year.
